Ossie Davis, RIP

I'm sad about Ossie Davis's passing.

I'm sure there will be lots of mentions of his beautiful Eulogy For Malcolm X and Do The Right Thing and dozens of other amazing accomplishments of his full and rich life.

So, I'm going to take this opportunity to celebrate the director of Cotton Comes To Harlem, which was arguably - and I'll happily take on the argument, as I've never seen a better choice - Blaxploitation movie. It's a wonderful, fun, funny action movie with just enough to say to make it a serious movie but not so much that it doesn't feel like good action.

The world has lost a man so great that even truly historically significant accomplishments of his will be left off many of the celebrations of his life, just because there are so damn many. How amazing is that? Wouldn't you like that to be true of you at the end of your life?

The saddest part is that he will not be there to eulogize his own life as passionately and beautifully as he did for others of his level of importance.
