Bad news

"All we got on this team are a buncha Jews, spics, niggers, pansies, and a booger-eatin' moron!"

Tanner Boyle does not say that line in Richard Linklater's Bad News Bears. Is that specifically what's wrong with the movie? Well, no, of course not. It does sort of symbolize it somehow.

Michael Ritchie's original Bad News Bears felt like it was about real troubled kids. The kids in the remake just seem kind of ornery but amiable. The punches are pulled in this.

And how is it that so many modern movies are the same length as older movies, in this case actually a little longer, and feel like they're about so much less? I didn't feel that one kid in this had a fully developed story, even Amanda, ferchrissake!

For whatever it's worth, Linklater's School of Rock actually does a better job of capturing the spirit of Ritchie's film. Maybe just because of the lack of direct comparisons, though.

It did get my hankering up to revisit the original, though, which is good. If it turns out I'm talking only from rosy colored memories of the original, I'll be sure to tell you.
