The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is the best goddamn movie of 2005.

There were a number of fine movies last year, including the deservedly acclaimed other cowboy movie, and I've not even seen all of the ones that may be up there somewhere somehow. I don't care. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is the best goddamn movie of 2005.

If I had money to put down on it, I'd put it down without hesitation. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is the best goddamn movie of 2005.

Is it the rich story? The fearless performances? The intense and perfectly crafted script? All of those things, in part. The thing I'm left most solidly is the way everything in the movie, scenery, actor, character's heart, setting, is all both beautiful and ugly... and not in a self-conscious "Here's a trick I learned at a writer's seminar" way that so many writer's fall on, but as something that permeates every frame of the movie. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is the best goddamn movie of 2005.

The story is about revenge, friendship and promises, but that's only a piece of what the movie is about. Not because it's the kind of movie that academics should tear apart with tired ideas, but because it's a guy movie and like all guys, it's got plenty going on beneath but it's not that anxious to talk about it. It wants to show you a few things that should give you some idea. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is the best goddamn movie of 2005.

Every way I can think to express the exquisite perfection of this movie seems like it will turn half the people away for being too arty and the other for being too brutal, but you'd all be letting yourselves down. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is the best goddamn movie of 2005.
