Douchebaggers

I'm not going to bore you too much with my thoughts on Daybreakers. It's the kind of modestly stupid movie that would be perfectly entertaining and offer enough room for suspension of disbelief if it had a charismatic leading actor.

However, instead of doing that, they picked Ethan Hawke.

How does this douchebag keep getting work?

Everybody goes out of their way to talk about how terrible Keanu Reeves is, and I'm not here to defend him exactly.

But seriously, when has Ethan Hawke shown the range of Bill & Ted and The Gift? Never!

Does that mean Keanu Reeves is more annoying for not developing what would seem more potential?

Well, probably.

But then he also has a weird charm and charisma that allows me to see why people cast him, and why he works in certain things, even when he's just wooden Keanu persona.

Ethan Hawke can't act and he's dull as a wet towel as a leading man.

Make it stop, Hollywood! I want to at least try to enjoy your candy-coated dull-witted entertainments for what they are, but you make it really hard sometimes!

I don't know. He just seems pigeonholed in the "angsty" box. I really liked him in TRAINING DAY and BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD, even the remake of ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13.

Your thoughts on these performances?

I've not seen Training Day, but I'd say his performances in the other two are pretty dull and his lack of charisma, regardless of his acting ability or lack thereof, is definitely one of the things that keeps the Assault on Precinct 13 remake from ever being very interesting.

In fairness, he's probably not a bad actor. He probably goes in that category with Mark Wahlberg of good-looking actors who aren't bad if you put them in a supporting role or in an ensemble, but just don't have what it takes to carry a movie.
